Rovinj at a glance

Rovinj sits on the western coast of Istria. The old town is centered on the church of St. Euphemia, and the lanes around it are the main reason people come. Most visitors also spend time at the harbor, on the beaches south of the center and on boat trips.

The local tourism portal states that motor vehicles are banned in the old town, so you reach it on foot or by bike. Plan where to leave your car before you arrive, and check the current parking fees at the parking sites. This is an independent guide and has no link to the town or to its tourist board.

Rovinj old town and St. Euphemia

The baroque church of St. Euphemia stands at the top of the old town. Its bell tower is about 60 m high, and a copper statue of the saint on top turns with the wind and shows its direction. Stories about the saint's sarcophagus are legends, so read them as such.

Entering the church is described as free, and the tower climb is described as paid. Check the price and the hours at the entrance. The stairs are described as narrow and open, made of wood, and there is no lift. Guides give different dates for when the tower was started, 1651 or 1654, and agree that it was built in the 17th century.

Time and shoes

Allow a few hours for the lanes, the church and the harbor, and more if you want to climb the tower. The tower stairs are narrow and made of wood, so wear shoes with a good grip.

Out of town

Rovinj makes a good base for the west coast. Poreč, Vrsar and the Limski Canal are along the same coast, and Pula has the Roman monuments.
